High Cross Cadets - Drum Corps returns to Christchurch

The High Cross Cadets is the Brainchild of Corps Director Mike Horlock, (Somerford Sound) to recreate the Drum Corps activity in Christchurch.

Membership of High Cross Cadets is drawn from all 3 of Christchurch's Drum & Bugle Corps: Somerford Sound, Freelancers and Splitz Show Corps, as well as musicians from other Bands in the area and members who are completely new to Marching Music.

After several years of DCUK, DCE and DCI trips, it was a trip to the 2015 DCI Soundsport Event in Bristol that kick started the Christchurch Mini Corps movement and after a few initial meetings, it was decided that High Cross Cadets would perform under the Soundsport and Mini Corps UK banners.

The show for 2017 is entitled "Return" and starts with a respectful nod and wink to our very proud Somerford Sound roots when we open with "Allegro con Fuoco" from Dvorak's "New World Symphony". Allegro has been mixed with a new and different arrangement "Largo" which features a Brass Quartet to create a calming effect before smashing back into the allegro.

Our ballad is the Percy Sledge monster hit, "When a Man Loves a Woman". We're sticking close to the original and featuring a Soprano solo during the chorus.

To close off the show, we're giving you a true flavour of the 1980s by playing a brand new arrangement of the Madness Mega Hit "It Must Be Love". Within this, we're featuring our prized Drumline.

Framing the whole show is our Colour Guard and they have gone for a traditional Guard show utilising Flags and Rifles mixed with modern dance ideas.

With help from Blue Barons Mini Corps with the Bugles, Lee Court of UK Fan Network for donating the Drums, High Cross Church in Somerford for the Rehearsal Facility and Kidsgrove Scouts for the provision of Guard Equipment, High Cross Cadets are delighted to march in competition; the first time a Drum Corps from Christchurch has competed since 2001.
