It is with deep sadness that we advise of the passing of Mike Newman, affectionately known as Blakey, who passed away peacefully on 25 April 2025.
Mike was a founding member and Corps Director of the multi-award-winning New Surrey Raiders Drum and Bugle Corps, and later went on to lead The Cadence Drum and Bugle Corps, continuing to shape and inspire countless performers.
Mike was a long-standing and highly respected member of the Drum Corps United Kingdom (DCUK) Board of Directors and his influence on the marching arts was far-reaching and profound.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Mike was inducted into the DCUK Hall of Fame in 2000, honouring his many, many years of service to DCUK and the broader marching arts community. His impact went far beyond titles though as Mike tended to not prefer the limelight. He was instrumental in organising and running numerous DCUK events and contests, serving as a Regional Contest Director and organiser, and played a number of key roles in many DCUK Championship Finals.
Mike was more than an organiser—he was a mentor, a supporter, and a passionate champion of young people. His dedication to nurturing their growth as musicians, performers and as individuals was almost a life mission always promoting discipline, creativity and confidence.
Even after retiring from day-to-day involvement, Mike remained a valued and visible presence in the activity. He continued to support the community with generosity, wisdom, and warmth, always ready to offer sound advice, thoughtful counsel, and the outstretched hand of friendship to all he met.
Mike “Blakey” Newman leaves behind a legacy will live on in the hearts of those he inspired. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever honoured.
Our thoughts are with Paul, Mandy, Ben, Charlie and their families at this difficult time.
We will publish funeral arrangements and details in due course.
