The COMPANY and Thurrock Marching Brass take honours at Woking
Sunday 29th June and the
performance arena was in tip top condition with the added bonus that
the sun was shining (unlike the day before - which was evident by
the slightly soft under foot front line area) and the magnificent
Leslie Gosden Stand at Woking Town Football Club was ready for the
2nd DCUK contest of the 2014 season. Sponsored by the local
Corps, Cadence, the good size audience were going to be treated to 9
Corps all of whom were eager to impress.
The day started with the Open
Class and The Pacemakers (5th - 45.05) took to the field performing
music from Phantom of the Opera, Wicked and Michael Jacksons
Thriller and for a small Corps they certainly packed punch.
The Black Knights (3rd - 63.65) were next up performing their show
entitled "Grid" and this production, based around a
computer game, has some well executed fast paced moments and it will
be good to see this show progress over the coming months.
Spirit of Coventry (6th -
40.05) have had a difficult winter but they should be rightly proud
of their performance of 1980's classics from such groups as Duran
Duran, A-Ha and Madness and special mention to the soloist in
Eternal Flame. Our host Corps today, Cadence (4th - 51.95),
are another very young but rapidly improving Corps. Their
show, entitled "Nightscapes", is challenging the members
but they were obviously up for the challenge and as the season goes
on this production should go from strength to strength.
The stand had filled nicely by
the time the final two Corps were set to perform and we were served
up to very different styles of show. Kidsgrove Scouts (2nd -
70.85), with their Miss Saigon show, gave us the big impact 'in your
face' performance which had sections of the crowd on their feet a
number of times. With a strong presence from the Colour Guard
helping tell the story you can tell this Corps are not going to sit
on their laurels but will be pushing to take the top spot back again come
September. In contrast, The Company (1st - 72.25) completely embrace the more modern style of performance with, once again, a very strong front line and also sporting their new uniforms for the first time. This is a classic CO show and, as expected from this group, is executed to their normal high standard. So, can their "Four" production, depicting the four seasons, bring them their second UK title? The Company repeat performance - Woking 2014
The Junior Class featured three
very young but extremely entertaining Corps. Cadence Cadets
(3rd - 25.15) were first up with their Sound of Music show include
live singing. They were swiftly followed by Cadence Juniors
(2nd - 34.80) performing to music from the musical Oliver and definitely
left us wanting "more please sir". Last Corps of the
day to perform where Thurrock Marching Brass (1st - 43.25) who,
despite their young age, were extremely strong across all the
captions and especially their brass players. Their Sound of Magic
show featured music from, amongst others, Queen and Harry Potter
with matching scenery spread around the field. Deserving winners of
the Junior Class.
Full scores and recaps sheets
can be found via our Results Page.
In two weekends time (Sunday
13th July) we move back up country to Leicester and the
Saffron Lane Athletics Stadium where we have one Junior Corps and 10
Open Class Corps in attendance
All 9 performances from Woking
are now available on the UK Fan Network so if you were not able to
