John "Skip" Garton

It is with great sadness that we advise on the passing of John "Skip" Garton, who died peacefully in his sleep on 21st March 2025.

John was a dedicated and passionate leader within our activity, John served as the Chairman of Drum Corps United Kingdom from 1987 to 1994 and later as a Life Vice President.

Amongst many notable achievements John played a pivotal role in the reunification of the Drum Corps activity here in the UK during the late 1980’s. Through a combination of his outstanding diplomacy, tact, focus, and perseverance John helped establish the democratic governance that Drum Corps and Winter Guard activities continue to enjoy to this day and can be rightly referred to as one of our modern day founding fathers.

Beyond his contributions to the marching arts, John was a devoted youth leader at the Oliver Hind Youth Club based in Sneinton, Nottingham and for many years was the Captain of the 2nd Nottingham Boys Brigade, where he led their esteemed Drum Corps, The Dako Red Devils. His unwavering commitment to guiding and mentoring young people left a lasting impact on countless lives.

Our thoughts are with David, Debbie, and their families at this difficult time.

We will publish funeral arrangements and details in due course.
